Updated Triton-based 4x4 wagon to launch in Australia later this year

The updated 2019 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has been captured in the wild – wearing camouflage, naturally – ahead of its Australian launch before the end of this year.

It doesn’t take a Rhodes Scholar to see the revised frontal design of Mitsubishi’s large SUV rival to the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X borrows from the revised Triton ute launched at the end of last year, with which it shares a platform and engine.

You can see the outline of a tweaked bonnet design, a bluffer and taller nose, and what is probably a sleeker ‘dynamic shield’ grille beneath the cladding. Like the ute version, it should look both more contemporary and a little tougher/more macho.

It’s harder to make out too many changes along the side profile, with that upswept window-line and the distinctive body sculpting above the rear wheel unlikely to change much.

The high-mounted tail lights remain, though new LED signatures appear to feature. Whether Mitsubishi axes the polarising lower design of these lights, with red plastic running vertically down to the bumper, remains to be seen.

Some of the interior changes added to the Triton – roof-mounted air vents for instance – are already fitted to the Pajero Sport. But you might expect a bigger list of active safety tech to trickle down from the Exceed variant and into the others.

Don’t expect many big changes to the 2.4-litre diesel or eight-speed auto, though the Super-Select II 4WD system may get a tweak or two.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO John Signoriello recently confirmed the revised Pajero Sport would lob this year, when discussing his company's record sales performance in 2018.

“This year we predict the new car market to be subdued but we are looking forward to the new Triton sales commencing this month and we will have a number of special editions which we will be bringing to the market in the first quarter,” he said.

“We will also have updates to the ASX, Outlander PHEV and Pajero Sport later this year to further strengthen our position in the key market growth segments.”

The Pajero Sport is the second most popular ute-based SUV in its segment behind the Isuzu MU-X, averaging about 550 sales per month. It sells concurrently with the older Pajero, though that car’s time is running short as regulatory requirements catch up to it.
