Cadillac electric crossover previewed

Luxury crossover will be the first model based on GM's new EV platform.

The first-ever electric car from Cadillac has been previewed ahead of its release in a few years time.

As we've previously reported, the as-yet-unnamed Cadillac crossover will be the first production car to use General Motors' new electric vehicle platform.

The EV platform can accommodate a variety of battery sizes, and can be configured to for front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive setups. According to the automaker, it can tailor EVs made on the architecture "for maximum usability throughout GM vehicle lineups in different countries".

“Cadillac’s EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world,” Steve Carlisle, president of Cadillac, said in a prepared statement.

“It will represent the height of luxury and innovation while positioning Cadillac as the pinnacle of mobility.”

GM previously indicated the new electric vehicle platform will go into production in 2021.

Late last week GM confirmed Cadillac would be the company's leading electric vehicle brand.

Currently the automaker's only full electric vehicle is the Chevrolet Bolt. Its other electrified models include the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid, and Chevrolet Volt, which goes out of production in March.

Cadillac's last foray into the electrified vehicle market was the ill-fated ELR (above). Although blessed with a striking design, the coupe failed to sell more than a few thousand units as it was almost $50,000 more expensive than the Volt it was based on.
