2019 Hyundai Veloster N TCR revealed

Race-ready hatchback is aimed at American motorsport, complete with 260kW from its four-cylinder engine.

Hyundai Motorsport has unveiled its race-ready Veloster N TCR, aimed at customer racers and international behemoths alike, at the 2019 Detroit motor show.

Set to take on hotted-up versions of the Honda Civic Type R, Volkswagen Golf GTI, and Audi RS3 when it launches, the N TCR will be powered by a 350hp (260kW), 450Nm four-cylinder turbocharged engine, hooked up to the front wheels.

A six-speed sequential transmission with pneumatic paddle shifters and mechanical locking differential are both standard fit, in keeping with TCR specifications. Brakes are 380mm ventilated units up front and 278mm units down back, hiding behind 18-inch alloy wheels designed in-house.

It's the same powertrain used in the i30N TCR – Hyundai says the two cars share 85 per cent of their components overall. Both are produced in at Hyundai Motorsport HQ in Germany.

Gone is the road-ready interior, replaced with a stripped-back racing setup with Sabelt competition seats and six-point belts, while the regular dials have been subbed for a fully-configurable driver display. Infotainment is handled by... who are we kidding, it's a race car.

TCR regulations mean it'll tip the scales at 1285kg including driver and 100L of fuel. Although the TCR rules are global (the competition is coming Down Under) the Veloster N will be focused on the USA, given the car's relative popularity in that hatchback-averse market.

"The addition of the Veloster N TCR to the customer motorsports line-up gives teams in national markets where the Veloster N road car is available a more relevant platform for their respective audiences," the company says in its press release.

Bryan Herta Autosport will lead the Veloster N charge in the USA, running two cars in the upcoming IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season.

Australia

Local buyers will be able to purchase the N TCR for €135,000 ($215,000) excluding transport and spare parts.
