2020 Cadillac XT6 unveiled

New seven-seat crossover bridges gap between XT5 and Escalade.

The new Cadillac XT6 crossover has been unveiled ahead of its in-the-flesh debut at the 2019 Detroit motor show.

Design-wise the new seven-seat SUV has front and rear ends largely inspired by the 2016 Escala concept, although it misses out on that vehicle's slinky proportions and silhouette.

Available features include an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, night vision, wireless phone charging, LED headlights, 21-inch wheels, six USB ports, a head-up display, surround view camera system, adaptive cruise control, and a 14-speaker Bose sound system.

At launch the XT6 will only be available with one engine option, a naturally-aspirated 3.6-litre V6 cranking out 231kW of power and 367Nm of torque.

A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard, while all-wheel drive is available.

Under the skin, the XT6 rides on the same front- and all-wheel drive platform as the GMC Acadia — sold in Australia as the Holden Acadia — and the upcoming Chevrolet Blazer.

While the company has yet to release the XT6's dimensions, they shouldn't too different the Acadia, which is 4917mm long, 1915mm wide, 1745mm tall, and has a 2857mm wheelbase.

This makes the new car half-a-size bigger than the five-seat XT5, which is 4815mm long, but has the same 2857mm wheelbase the Acadia.

The range-topping Escalade is significantly larger, measuring 5144mm long, 2045mm wide, 1890mm tall and riding on a 2946mm wheelbase in short wheelbase form. The ESV variant is a dimension-gobbling 5697mm long.

In its homeland, the XT6 will invariably be compared with the Lincoln Aviator, which is based on the same rear- and all-wheel drive architecture as the latest Ford Explorer.

The Aviator is powered by either a 298kW/542Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, or a 335kW/815Nm plug-in hybrid drivetrain employing the same V6 motor.

The new Cadillac XT6 goes on sale in the US from the second quarter of 2019.
