2019 Peugeot 208 spied again

All-new hatchback shreds the white stuff ahead of production reveal in the coming months.

The next-generation Peugeot 208 has been spied on the snowy roads of Europe this week, ahead of an anticipated reveal at the Geneva motor show in March.

As we've seen from previous prototypes, the new-gen 208 will be larger than the current model, and incorporate various design elements inspired by the company's latest aesthetic theme, meaning it should bear a strong resemblance to the 3008, 508 and 5008.

Up front there's a new two-part grille flanked by angular headlights and diagonal LED strips – the latter first seen on the 508 sedan and wagon – which should give the French hatchback a more aggressive and upmarket look compared to its cutesy predecessor.

This particular vehicle is a five-door model (it's likely the three-door will be dropped), and it appears the body is longer and wider than the current car – which should open up more space for passengers and luggage.

Out the back we can see a chunky bum and Peugeot's signature 'claw' LED tail-light signature. We reckon contrasting roof options and plenty of chrome bits will feature throughout.

Beneath the sheet metal, the 208 will ride on the PSA Group's 'CMP' architecture for compact vehicles, which already underpins the DS3 Crossback and will also be shared with the next-generation Opel/Vauxhall Corsa. A range of three- and four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines should be offered.

Like its siblings, the 208 will be available as an all-electric version said to be capable of over 450km per charge should the specifications match that of the DS3 Crossback E-Tense.

Rounding out the upgrades will be an overhauled interior featuring Peugeot's latest 'i-Cockpit' layout, likely meaning digital instruments, a large infotainment display and upmarket materials.

Given Peugeot's premium push, the 208 should be decked out with the latest in driver assistance and safety tech, think autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and so on. It's worth noting the current model gained AEB as a rolling update, but we'd wager the new 208 will get additional features like pedestrian and cyclist detection, along with a higher operating speed.
