Byton M-Byte interior revealed with 48.0-inch screen

Oh, and there's a touchscreen in the steering wheel too.

Byton, a Chinese electric car start-up, has revealed the production-ready interior for its first electric vehicle at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Forget about your run-of-the-mill 12.0-inch screens, the M-Byte crossover will feature a gargantuan 48.0-inch curved display spanning from the base of one A-pillar to the other.

Byton claims it is as wide as a seven iPads sitting side by side, or the equivalent of 24 smartphone screens. The display automatically adjusts its brightness according to conditions, and has an automatic night mode.

Dubbed the 'Shared Experience Display', it can be controlled either via 7.0-inch touchscreen in the centre of the steering wheel, or an 8.0-inch portrait mode touchscreen positioned along the centre console.

These screens have their own interface for entertainment, phone connectivity, navigation, climate control and cloud services. They can also be blanked out and used as a remote touchpad controller for the 48.0-inch display.

In addition to showing speed, navigation, and other infotainment functions, the main screen can also be used for video chats and games, presumably when the car is safely parked.

The system will also recognise gestures performed near the centre of the dashboard, and responds to voice commands.

Compared to the cabin of Byton's earlier concept cars, the production M-Byte interior features improved materials and a tweaked dashboard design, which now wraps around to integrate better with the door panels.

Byton says the M-Byte will be revealed in full in June this year. Sales are slated to begin in China from the end of the year, then North America and Europe some time in 2020.

The M-Byte will reportedly be available with two battery options: a 71kWh version with around 400km of range, and a 95kWh variant capable of up to 525km of driving.
