Honda reveals in-car commerce prototype at CES
Dream Drive system allows drivers to pay for fuel, movies, parking along with making a reservation at your favourite restaurant.
Honda has taken its next step into the in-car commerce sphere with the reveal of the Honda Dream Drive prototype infotainment software, which the brand claims to be the "automotive industry’s first integrated driver and passenger infotainment, commerce, services and rewards dashboards within the vehicle environment".
After first being shown as a concept at CES 2017, the Honda Dream Drive system has been co-developed with ConnectedTravel, a company that specialises in connected vehicle platform and application services.
The technology has two main 'experiences' designed specifically for drivers and passengers respectively. 'Driver' expands the in-car payment idea introduced by the 2017 concept, adding the ability to pay for fuel, movie tickets and parking, make restaurant reservations, order food for pickup or delivery, along with sharing the driver's location.
'Passenger', meanwhile, allows the ability to play 'mixed reality' games, watch movies, listen to music, use travel applications, along with controlling various vehicle functions like the radio and navigation systems from the passenger's mobile device.
Honda has partnered with numerous (American) brands and firms for the Dream Drive ecosystem and functions, including Atom Tickets, Chevron U.S.A. Inc., The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Grubhub, Glympse, iHeartRadio, IPS Group, Arrive, Parkopedia, Phillips 66, Yelp, and USAA.
The company has also added Mastercard and PayPal to its compatible payment methods, joining Visa.
"Honda has teamed up with industry leaders who want to understand how to best provide in-vehicle services to our customers," said John Moon, managing director for strategic partnerships at Honda Innovations.
"These collaborations are important to test consumer desire so we can understand how to mutually serve our customers."
