Revived off-roader nameplate confirmed for the Australian and US markets in 2020.

The short clip shows a camouflaged prototype testing in the States, with Kim McCullough, vice president of marketing for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) America, delivering the news that North American customers will be able to purchase one in 2020.

"This announcement is a holiday gift to our Defender fans in North America and a hint of what’s to come in the New Year," she says.

McCullough adds the company has worked hard to ensure the new Defender is instantly recognisable, from the squared-off body and circular headlights to the rear-mounted spare tyre – we reckon it looks a little like the old Discovery 3 and 4, though.

When it makes its production debut later this year, the Defender will also offer "the latest driver assistance and connectivity features", indicating active safety systems like autonomous emergency braking should be available, along with JLR's latest infotainment systems.

"The new model will represent 70 years of innovation and improvement in just one model year; honoring the model’s history for rugged durability, while thoroughly remaining a Defender for the 21st century," the company says.
