Nissan to demo Invisible-to-Visible augmented reality system

System can work for both human-driven and autonomous vehicles

Nissan will demonstrate its Invisible-to-Visible technology at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas, which kicks off this week.

The augmented reality system combines data drawn from the car's on-board sensors, and driving and routing data sourced from the cloud.

According Tetsuro Ueda, an expert leader from Nissan's research centre, the idea behind the system is to give drivers an insight into the "unseen world", or Metaverse, motivating the decisions of upcoming autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles.

When the car is being driven a human, the Invisible-to-Visible system can provide helpful information, such as the best lane on a clogged road, details about upcoming conditions and parking spaces available close to the destination.

The system could also use the car's sensors to help provide a clearer view through, say, fog.

The driver could also interact with a professional racing driver in real time or drive behind a virtual chase car to help improve their appreciation of a twisty piece of blacktop.

In addition to this, the Invisible-to-Visible can also connect the driver and passengers to people located elsewhere, who they can interact with via a chosen avatar.

At CES the company will have a demonstration cockpit with a set of augmented reality googles to demonstrate the technology.
