2020 Toyota Supra exterior accidentally revealed

Thanks to a long gestation period, this latest revelation is simultaneously exciting and highly predictable

The exterior of the fifth-generation Toyota Supra has been accidentally revealed a few weeks ahead of its official launch at the 2019 Detroit motor show.

These images were originally posted by user t93 on the forums of Supra MkV.com. T93 claims it was sent to them when they signed up for the waiting list on Toyota Germany's website.

While relatively low resolution, they do show the entire exterior of the coupe. Given an earlier spy photo of the car's undisguised front-end and numerous high-resolution photos of disguised pre-production prototypes, most recently during testing in Australia, this leak looks to be legit.

Based on the same platform as the latest-generation BMW Z4, and built alongside its sibling at Magna Steyr's factory in Austria, the new Supra's exterior shares more in common with the FT-1 concepts than its platform mate.

The voluptuous curves, as well as the rounded Formula One-style nose and race car-like rear diffuser, of the 2014 FT-1 concept remain, but in significantly toned-down form. Sadly, but predictably, the concept's glass engine cover has been deleted.

From earlier spy photos, we know the cabin shows off the car's BMW heritage more clearly, with a large amount switchgear and electronics equipment taken from the Bavarian company's parts bin.

We don't have any official details about specifications, but leaks have indicated the new Supra will be offered with turbocharged four- and six-cylinder BMW engines ranging from 145kW/320Nm to 250kW/500Nm.

Australia

With the car scheduled to make its in-the-flesh debut at the 2019 Detroit motor show starting in the middle of January, we won't have to wait too long to see the new Supra in all of its high-resolution glory.

The new Supra will go on sale in Australia during the second half of 2019. Prices will reportedly sit somewhere between the 86 and BMW Z4, so somewhere in the $40,000 to $80,000 range.
