Nissan trademarks IMS, IMQ names

Are there more electric cars on the horizon for the Japanese brand?

The offering of electric cars at Nissan dealerships worldwide could be expanding in the not-too-distant future.

At the very least, it's likely the company is preparing two new electric car concepts over the coming year or so.

AutoGuide has discovered trademark filings for the IMS and IMQ names at the European Intellectual Property Office.

These two names seem to follow on from the Nissan IMx concept unveiled at the 2017 Tokyo motor show.

The IMx concept featured a two-motor all-wheel drive system generating 320kW of power and 700Nm of torque, and rode on a new skateboard platform.

Rumours have suggested the IMx, or IMX, will head into production to broaden Nissan's electric car portfolio beyond the Leaf hatchback and into the popular crossover category.

With the X in IMX standing for crossover, it's likely IMS will be some sort of sporty model, possibly a sporty sedan or "four-door coupe" car if it ever gets the green light for production.

We're not quite sure what the Q in IMQ might be for, though. We'd love to hear your theories. Just leave them in the comments section below.
