Kia to debut mood recognition technology at CES

System could be used in future autonomous vehicles

Kia will demonstrate its mood detection technology at its stand at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving system, or READ for short, was co-developed with the Affective Computing group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab.

According to the company, the system uses "artificial intelligence-based bio-signal recognition technology" to detect the driver's mood and alter the cabin environment to create a "more joyful mobility experience".

"[The] READ System will enable continuous communication between drivers and vehicles through the unspoken language of ‘emotional feeling’, thereby providing an optimised human senses-oriented space for drivers in real-time," Albert Biermann, Hyundai-Kia's recently appointed head of research and development, said in a prepared statement.

This technology looks like it won't be destined for production for a little while yet. It and other new technologies will be demonstrated at the company's "Space of Emotive Driving" stand, which gazes into a "future when autonomous driving is the norm and priority is given to improving the human mobility experience".
