In following the 911 Carrera T, the mid-engined models have been given a the lightweight treatment.
Porsche has added another variant to its 718 Cayman and Boxster range, today announcing a pared-back 718 T for both coupe and drop-top.
As with the 911 T revealed last year, the 718 T aims to offer a simpler, lighter (and slightly more performance-oriented) take on the base Cayman formula. To that end, it rides on a PASM sport chassis that sits the cars 20mm lower than their respective bases. It's actually the first time Porsche has offered the lower, sharper setup in conjunction with the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in its latest mid-engined models.
Although a PDK transmission is offered, a six-speed manual gearbox with shorter ratios is standard. That should help drivers extract the most from the 221kW/380Nm four-cylinder turbo engine, paired with a mechanical locking differential on the rear axle.
Regardless of transmission, the 718 T comes with Porsche's active transmission mounts, designed to slacken off when you're driving in a straight line for a smooth ride, before stiffening up in the corners for better response.
As with its bigger brother, the Cayman's interior has been given a retro makeover with Sport-Tex sports seats, fabric door pulls and a blank space where the infotainment system would otherwise sit. Don't worry, you can tick a box to have it returned. There's a smaller GT steering wheel, too.
Sport Chrono is standard, giving drivers a wheel-mounted switch to toggle between Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual modes. In the manual, the system can be used to toggle auto rev-matching, in dual-clutch models it brings about Launch Control and the push-to-pass Sport Response system.
Externally, the 718 T differentiates itself from the regular Cayman and Boxster with 20-inch alloy wheels finished in high-gloss grey, mirror shells and unique graphics finished in Agate Grey, and a centre-mounted sports exhaust. Black, Indian Red, Racing Yellow, Carrara White, Deep Black, GT Silver, Miami Blue and Lava Orange will be offered.
