Albert Biermann appointed head of Hyundai R&D

Albert Biermann to step up from his current role as chief vehicle tester and head of high-performance cars

Albert Biermann, former head of BMW M, has been appointed head of research and development at the Hyundai Motor Group.

He replaces Yang Woong-chul, who, according to Reuters, will leave the company.

Biermann joined Hyundai in 2015 as the company's head of vehicle testing and high performance cars. Prior to that he spent around 30 years at BMW, capping off his career there as the head of the M division.

Since joining the Korean automaker, Biermann has been praised for his work on the Hyundai i30 N hot hatch, and the Kia Stinger sports sedan. He was also played a key role in fine-tuning the dynamics of the upcoming Genesis G70, the company's first true BMW 3 Series competitor.

The appointment of Biermann to post of R&D chief is latest move in Chung Eui-sun's push to revamp the upper echelons of the automaker.

Last month he appointed Luc Donckerwolke, formerly Bentley's head of design, as the replacement for Peter Schreyer, the company's chief designer. Thomas Schemera, previously a BMW executive, was appointed in October to be Hyundai's head of electric and autonomous cars.

Chung was appointed executive vice chairman in September, a move widely regarded as signalling his position as the anointed successor to his father, current CEO Chung Mong-koo.
