OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition smartphone revealed

Supercar-inspired smartphone offers speedy fast-charging feature and beefy processing power.

McLaren Automotive is better known for their work in, well, the automotive sphere. However, this week it has revealed its latest creation in collaboration with smartphone manufacturer, OnePlus.

Dubbed the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, the new smartphone is based on the company's current flagship phone, the OnePlus 6, and adds some beefier specifications to boot.

Where the regular OnePlus 6 gets 6GB or 8GB of RAM, the 6T McLaren gets a whopping 10GB of memory for improved multitasking and processing power. That's more than a lot of high-end laptop computers, go figure.

It also features Warp Charge 30, a new fast-charging standard that can replenish "a day's power in just 20 minutes". This is achieved through new integrated circuits in both the charger and the handset to allow 30W of current to charge the battery without slowing down when the device is in use, or generating excessive heat.

Visually, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition gets Papaya Orange accents lining the bottom edge of the device – a signature McLaren colour – along with a carbon-fibre-look panel under the glass backing that references the British carmaker's intensive use of carbon-fibre technology in its race and road cars.

The Warp Charge 30 power unit gets a Papaya Orange braided cord cable, and a carbon-fibre McLaren logo encased in the box.

"OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition is a combination of speed, technology, and beauty. Inspired by the desire to constantly challenge existing standards, OnePlus and McLaren have introduced intricate design with a powerful and versatile experience," McLaren said in its press release.

"The new device marks the start of a long-term partnership, celebrating a shared passion for speed." Perhaps more McLaren-branded smartphones are in the pipeline.

Scheduled to go on sale in Western Europe and North America on December 13, along with India, China and Scandinavia "soon after", the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition is priced at £649 ($1123.99).

There's no word on Australian availability, though CarAdvice has reached out to McLaren's local division for further comments.
