2019 Mitsubishi Triton launches with seven-year warranty, cheaper servicing

New-look Triton gets super sharp servicing plan and extended warranty to offset spec-led price increases

Mitsubishi Australia is offsetting a series of price increases on the updated MY19 Triton by slashing the cost of servicing, and extending its warranty to seven years.

MMC will offer the reassurance of a seven-year, 150,000km warranty on all MY19 Tritons, from the launch starting now until at least June 30 next year. This extended warranty goes beyond the company’s regular five-year coverage, and is by far the best offering among any of the mainstream ute sellers.

Only the just-returned SsangYong Musso beats this offer, with the Korean brand boldly launching with a seven-year/unlimited distance warranty. The other brand offering a seven-year warranty is Kia, though of course it lacks a dual-cab ute.

The 5+2 warranty is the same conditional policy as MMC has been offering on the Eclipse Cross SUV.

“Utes take a battering. People worry about warranty, so we’re seeing if we can overcome some concerns,” said Mitsubishi Australia’s COO Tony Principe, adding that it wasn’t out of the question to make the offer permanent.

MMC has also slashed the price of servicing the Triton, at least for the first three visits (at 12 month/15,000km intervals). Each of these three services is capped at $299, or $897 total, compared to $1510 all up previously. For the base petrol model that cost of three services is only $597, down from $1135.

So, what’s new with the updated Triton? The 20-variant range that hits showrooms in January gets a brasher look, a new six-speed automatic gearbox, plus small tweaks to the cabin and the rear leaf suspension.

Furthermore, it gets class-leading levels of safety technologies including AEB on all versions bar the absolute base.

It also increased the price of its volume selling GLS by $2000, the GLX+ by $1500 and the new flagship GLS Premium (in lieu of the Exceed) by $3000.

Together, the tweaks are designed to improve Mitsubishi's already strong ute market share of about 14 per cent, third overall to the dominant Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger. Australia is the world's number-two Triton market, after Thailand.
