Tesla previews three potential new models

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previewed three potential new electric vehicles during a presentation to prospective investors ahead of the brand’s upcoming initial public offering.

The ever-extravagant Mr Musk explained that Tesla plans to build a cabriolet, a van and an SUV on the same platform as the Model S sedan, directing attention to the sketches at the top of slide 19.

“Each one of these cars is going to be frickin’ bad ass,” he said.

And if Mr Musk has his way, they may well be on their way to Australia, as he again stated his intention to have a Tesla store in the top 50 metropolitan areas in the world for the launch of the Model S in 2012.

He said the aim for the Model S was to make it the most desirable car in the luxury sedan segment with Lexus-style build quality.

“Every nuance of this car has to be perfect,” Mr Musk said.

A touchscreen centre console, which will feature 4G internet access and use text-to-speech software to read out emails, will be among the highlights. Mr Musk said developers will be able to write apps for the Tesla’s console, much like Apple does with its products.

“It’s literally like having a MacBook Pro embedded in your centre console. This is mind blowing for the car business, but par for the course for Silicon Valley.

“There will not be anyone who brings technology faster to market than Tesla. We don’t have to go through seven committees to get something to market,” he said.

Tesla’s CFO, Deepak Ahuja, also spoke at the presentation and announced that even though Tesla is planning to produce 20,000 Model S vehicles per year, break-even will occur at around half that number.
