2019 Audi Q8 pricing and specs

New SUV flagship arrives Down Under starting at $128,900 before on-road costs.

The 2019 Audi Q8 has touched down in Australia, with the German marque's local arm detailing pricing and specifications for its SUV flagship ahead of customer deliveries commencing in January.

Priced from $128,900 plus on-roads, the Q8 will be available with two V6 powertrains – one petrol, one diesel.

Regardless of engine, the Q8 comes with a decent equipment list as standard. Highlights include the S line exterior package, 21-inch alloys, adaptive suspension with damper control, LED headlights with high-beam assist, an electric tailgate, MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch (10.1-inch top and 8.6-inch bottom display), the 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with wireless smartphone charging.

There's also DAB+ digital radio, a 180W 10-speaker Audi-branded sound system, Audi music interface with two rear USB outlets, electric folding exterior mirrors with heating and memory, electrically-adjustable front seats with four-way lumbar support, 'Valcona' leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, 40:20:40 split rear seats that slide fore and aft, and the convenience key (passive entry and push-button start).

On the driver assistance front, there's autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop&go and traffic jam assist, lane departure warning, front and rear pre-sense occupant protection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic assist, a head-up display, and a 360-degree camera system.

Customers can bolster that specification with the Premium Plus Package ($11,000) which brings larger 22-inch alloys, adaptive air suspension, matrix LED headlights, privacy glass, Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, quad-zone climate control, along with configurable ambient interior lighting.

An item would have ideally been paired with the adaptive air suspension is the Dynamic all-wheel steering system, a $4500 option that adds a high-torque electric spindle drive and two track rods turn the rear wheels. At low speeds, they turn five degrees in the opposite direction to the front wheels, reducing the turning circle by 1.1 metres. At high speeds, they turn 1.5 degrees in the same direction, improving stability.

There's also a Full Leather Package, trimming much of the cabin in nappa leather for an additional $8900. Various single-item options will be available as add-ons, too, as listed below:

  • Metallic paint - $2300
  • Power assisted door closure - $1500
  • Night vision assistant – improves poor visibility in the dark by electronically visualising the road and surroundings - $5590
  • Bang & Olufsen Advanced 3D Sound System, 23 loudspeakers including 3D sound, total output of 1920 watts - $12,100
  • Electric steering column adjustment - $900
  • Sunroof – 2-section, panoramic, tinted glass, electrically tilting and opening with electric sun shade - $3550
  • Front seat massage function – 10 pneumatic support cushions in 3 intensities.Includes 7 massage programs - $1050
  • Extended leather package, Dashboard; upper instrument panel - $3300
  • Inlays in Oak, grey brown high gloss - $400
  • Inlays in Fine grain ash, grey brown natural - $400

Back to the engines. At launch the Q8 will be available with a '55TFSI' 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol unit, making 250kW at 5500rpm and 500Nm between 2900 and 5300rpm.

Audi claims the 55TFSI will dash from 0-100 in 5.9 seconds while using 9.2L/100km on the combined cycle, thanks to 48V mild-hybrid technology.

The belt alternator starter and 10Ah lithium-ion battery allow for engine-off coasting at speeds between 55 and 160km/h, recuperates energy at a rate of up to 12kW, and the idle stop/start function can cut the engine from 22km/h – these functions save up to 0.7L/100km according to Audi.

Drive is sent to a rear-biased (40:60) quattro all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed 'tiptronic' automatic transmission as standard, with the former able to shift up to 70 per cent of torque to the front and 85 per cent to the rear wheels as required.

Later in 2019, the Q8 range will become a two-member family, in the form of the '50TDI', which offers 210kW of power and 600Nm of torque from its 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel, also paired with the 48V mild-hybrid technology.

When it arrives, the Q8 50TDI will be priced the same as the 55TFS,I at $128,900 before on-roads.

Other specifications include a 605L luggage area with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1755L with them folded. At 4986mm long, 1995mm wider and 1705mm tall, the Q8 is 66mm shorter in length but 27mm wider than the related Audi Q7.

The Audi Q8 is available to order now, with customer deliveries commencing in 'late January'.
