Pininfarina PF1 crossover to be based on Rivian platform – report

Detroit-based electric car maker will supply skateboard platform for the new SUV

The Pininfarina PF1 crossover will use a platform from Rivian, a start-up electric carmaker based in Detroit.

"Work has started on the PF1 and right now, we are in the process of finalising the design," Pawan Goenka, managing director of Mahindra, owner of Pininfarina, told Autocar India.

The magazine understands Pininfarina's new crossover will use Rivian's skateboard platform and associated technologies.

Rivian debuted its R1T pickup truck and R1S crossover at the Los Angeles motor show. With production set to begin in 2020, the top-spec models of the R1T and R1S have four motors generating a total of 562kW of power and 1120Nm of torque.

Top speed will be around 200km/h, and a 0-60mph (97km/h) time of 3.0 seconds is claimed. A 180kWh battery is said to be good for a driving range of 660km.

It's believed the Pininfarina PF1 might trade away some off-road capability for more power, and on-road performance, with a total of 800kW on tap being mooted.

The company is poised to begin production of its first Pininfarina-branded vehicle, the PF0 supercar, at the end of 2020.

Like the upcoming crossover, it too uses a platform and technology from elsewhere. In this case Rimac will "provide battery and drivetrain expertise, and hardware" to the Italian marque.
