Power. You can never have too much of it. So when Audi decided to create their first ever rear-wheel drive car, how apt that it would be in a beastly sports car with a fire-breathing naturally aspirated V10.
I first had the chance to experience the Audi R8 RWS at Phillip Island during the local launch. It’s the automotive equivalent of your blind date being a 10/10 before you’ve even had the chance to speak with them.
I then had the chance to drive it – virtually flat out at one of the world’s best race tracks. That blind date that presented as a 10/10 then became the coolest person you’ve ever met.
The R8 RWS is that right there – a car that blows you away at first glance and becomes even better once you’ve had the chance to give it a decent lashing.
What do I love about it? Aside from the fact it’s a rear-wheel-drive V10 sports car, the interior is beautifully presented with minimalism, but plenty of function. It’s easy to drive and could comfortably be used as a daily driver.
It sounds unbelievably incredible. The V10 engine note is unmatched and will be sorely missed when it eventually becomes a powertrain that doesn’t meet emissions regulations.
In terms of the negatives…there really is only one. The navigation and all audio functions are presented on the Audi Virtual Cockpit screen in front of the driver. So if, like my wife, your passenger likes to change radio stations every 7.5 seconds, it ends up being quite distracting.
Would I buy an Audi R8 RWS with my own money? Yes, absolutely. As a limited production run of just 999 cars, the RWS (Rear Wheel Series) is an incredibly cool car that will age gracefully and continue to bring smiles to the face of anybody that sees and hears it in action.
