2020 Audi Q4 to sport TT Offroad-inspired design – report

Brand design chief hints at what to expect from new crossover 'coupe', including plug-in hybrid power.

Audi has already promised a new crossover model – the Q4 – for launch sometime next year. This week, the German marque's design boss has given an indication as to what to expect from the vehicle's styling.

Speaking with Britain's Autocar, Andreas Mindt, head of exterior design for Audi, said the Q4 is "a bit more than a coupe version of the Q3, to my eyes a lot more".

The British publication claims Mindt confirmed the final design has been approved already, and that it will have one feature that will set the Q4 apart from other models in the Audi stable.

It's believed the Q4 will draw design inspiration from the TT Offroad concept (pictured) revealed for the 2014 Beijing motor show, and feature a digital-heavy interior with large high-definition displays and the latest in driver assistance systems.

Unlike coupe-styled crossovers offered by other brands, the Q4 is expected to take on more of a fastback or liftback aesthetic, much like the larger Q8.

As for motivation, the Q4 will likely be offered with a similar range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines to the new Q3, ranging from 1.5-litres to 2.0-litres in capacity.

Following the initial launch, a plug-in hybrid Q4 e-tron is expected to be released with an EV range of 31 miles (50km), mainly focused on the strict Chinese market, along with 'S' and 'RS' performance variants.

Key rivals for the Audi Q4 will include the BMW X2, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Range Rover Evoque.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest updates in the lead-up to the Q4's launch sometime in 2019.
