Audi e-tron GT: 2020 EV revealed

Slinky EV cruiser coming to showrooms in 2020. In the meantime, it's stalking the LA motor show floor.

Audi has unveiled its all-electric take on the classic grand tourer, revealing a preview of the e-tron GT headed for production in 2020.

Measuring up at 4.96m long, 1.96m wide and 1.38m tall, clothed in an evolution of the Sportback shape from the four-door A7/A5 models, Audi's design team has certainly given the GT proportions befitting a modern grand tourer. The body is made of a combination of carbon-fibre, aluminium, and high-strength steel, apparently developed in partnership with Porsche.

Up front, the GT concept evolves the corporate face established by the e-tron quattro, with a closed-over interpretation of Audi's singleframe grille and angry, squinting headlights. The front guards are pumped up with prominent brake-cooling vents, while the rear arches are suitably squat and angry.

Unlike the current A5 and A7, the rear of the e-tron concept is quite rounded, although the diffuser still contains some sharp edges and straight lines. We'd even go so far as to say it's curvy, which is a serious change from the norm in Ingolstadt.

As with the production e-tron SUV, the rear is spanned by an LED light bar before expanding into angular outboard brake lights.

Power comes from a pair of electric motors making a combined 434kW, for a claimed 3.5-second sprint to 100km/h. Top speed is limited to 240km/h in the interests of preserving range. Audi says power can be shuffled between individual wheels, allowing the car to deliver "just the desired amount of slip" in the corners.

The 90kWh battery is good for a claimed 400km of driving on the WLTP test cycle, and an 800V charging system opens the door for 320km of range from just 20 minutes of charging.

Inside, the e-tron GT has a cabin that looks essentially production ready. The driver is faced with a digital instrument cluster, while the dash is dominated by two touchscreens. The top one is dedicated to infotainment, the lower one handles climate control.

All the materials, from the seat trim to the roof lining, have been created with sustainable motoring in mind. There are no animal products on board – get excited, wealthy vegans. With two luggage spaces to work with – there's a 100L frunk where the engine would usually sit – you get space for 550L of gear.
