2019 Honda Passport unveiled

Shortened crossover based on Pilot said to have more off-road ability

The new Honda Passport has been unveiled at the 2018 Los Angeles motor show, set to slot between the CR-V and Pilot.

If it looks a little familiar, you don't need to get your eyes checked. The Passport is essentially a shortened version of the three-row Pilot sold in the States with more black plastic and less chrome.

It rides on the same 2819mm wheelbase as the larger crossover, but overall length has been reduced by 102mm to 4839mm, all of it coming from the rear overhang.

With seating for five passengers, the Passport will be pitched against the Ford Edge and Hyundai Santa Fe in North America.

While the Pilot is sold unashamedly as a family hauler with a dash of off-roading ability, the Passport is playing up its off-road chops, with the company stating shorter rear overhang means "improved approach, departure and break over angles, [making it] suitable for more rugged terrain".

Standard features include 20-inch alloy wheels, three-zone climate control, LED exterior lighting, reversing camera, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, and road departure mitigation.

Higher-spec models gain an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, hands-free power tailgate, blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, rear sunshades, wireless smartphone charging, Wi-Fi hotspot, and concierge services.

The Passport, like the Pilot, is powered exclusively by a 3.5-litre V6 cranking out 209kW of power and 355Nm of torque. It's hooked up to a nine-speed automatic, and is available in front-wheel drive or with a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system.
