2019 Porsche 911 goes official, here in Q2 2019

Eigth-generation sports car debuts in LA with new look, more power and more tech.

Porsche has unveiled the new '992' 911 sports car for the Los Angeles motor show this week, to be priced from $265,000 before on-road costs when it arrives Down Under in the second quarter of 2019.

While it doesn't look too different from the model it replaces (no surprises there), the 2019 Porsche 911 features comprehensive upgrades to its available technology catalogue, a revised engine for Carrera S models, and an all-aluminium body construction.

At launch there's just the Carrera S and Carrera 4S, both powered by an uprated version of the outgoing generation's 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six. Power has increased to 331kW (450hp), 22kW up on the previous Carrera S.

Porsche claims the rear-wheel drive Carrera S will hit 100km/h from a standstill in 3.7 seconds, while the all-wheel driven Carrera 4S completes the benchmark dash in 3.6 seconds – 0.4 seconds quicker than the old version. Opting for the Sports Chrono Package improves both times by a further 0.2 seconds.

Externally, the new 911 can be distinguished by the wider body (45mm at the front), recessed door handles, new LED headlights, vertical bonnet lines that harks back to the first generations of 911, and an overhauled rear design.

Out back the LED tail-lights are joined through the middle by an 'elegant light bar', wider haunches that are now constant across all variants, and a larger variable-position rear spoiler.

The rear bumper is also a lot chunkier than before, while the larger tailpipes sit on each side of the number plate holder.

Significant changes have been made to the interior too (above), including straighter lines, recessed instruments, and a new 10.9-inch Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system complemented by touch-capacitive buttons on the centre console.

Ahead of the driver, the central rev counter remains, but is now flanked by two frameless freeform displays that supply additional content.

Standard features include net-based navigation, along with various functions from the Porsche Connect Plus catalogue.

Porsche is touting three new assistance features that will be available on the new 911: Wet Mode, Warn and Brake assist, along with Night Vision Assist.

The former is a standard inclusion on the Carrera S and 4S, and is dubbed a 'world first' by the German marque. It detects water on the road, and tailors the control systems accordingly while alerting the driver of the changes.

Supplementing the new Wet Mode in the safety suite is the Warn and Brake assist system, also fitted as standard, which is Porsche-speak for autonomous emergency braking.

Finally, the new 911 will be optionally available with Night Vision Assist, which includes a forward-facing thermal imaging camera for enhanced vision ahead of the vehicle in poor lighting conditions.

Australia

Porsche's local division has confirmed the 911 Carrera S and Carrera 4S will lob Down Under during the second quarter of 2019, priced from $265,000 and $281,100 plus on-road costs respectively.

Stay tuned for a full pricing and specifications breakdown closer to launch.
