Ford Puma name trademarked

Could it be used for the 'Baby Bronco' SUV? Or maybe the Mustang-inspired electric crossover?

Ford has trademarked the Puma name, leading to speculation it could be used for one of the company's soon-to-be-launched crossovers.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation's website, Ford has trademarked the Puma name in New Zealand and Australia, leading to suggestions it could be applied to a new Bronco-inspired crossover.

Dubbed the "Baby Bronco" by media, the new model has styling inspired by the next-generation Bronco, and will fit between the EcoSport and Escape/Kuga in the global crossover range.

While the upcoming Bronco revival will be based on the current Ranger ute, the Baby Bronco crossover will use the Focus platform as its base.

Images leaked (top) from a dealer meeting last week revealed what we believe will be the Baby Bronco's styling. Earlier reports had suggested this model would be christened Maverick.

Another Ford vehicle still awaiting an official name is the all-electric crossover with styling inspired by the Mustang. Originally referred to as the Mach 1, a poor reception from die-hard fans has reportedly sent management searching for another arrangement of letters.

Ford last used the Puma name for a small European coupe based on the Fiesta. With the global market for coupes shrinking, and the company dedicating its energy to more popular crossovers, SUVs and utes, a revival of such a vehicle seems highly unlikely.

If the Blue Oval does decide to revive the Puma name for a crossover, it wouldn't be the first company to do so. Mitsubishi's Eclipse Cross shares little apart from its name and the three-diamond badge with the coupes and convertibles once sold in North America.

To our knowledge, the company has yet to file a trademark application for the Puma name in US, although one may be pending.

Even though the Puma coupe went out of production in 2002, Motor Authority believes Ford still has the rights to the name in European Union.

Whatever it's called, the Baby Bronco is expected to go on sale globally from 2020.
