2019 Subaru XV Plug-in Hybrid unveiled, not for Australia

Company's first plug-in hybrid vehicle retains AWD and boasts 27km EV range

The Subaru XV Plug-in Hybrid, or Crosstrek Hybrid as it will be known in the US, has been unveiled ahead of a full debut at the 2018 Los Angeles motor show.

The PHEV features a 102kW/182Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine mated to two electric motors and a hybrid all-wheel drive system.

One of the electric motors is responsible for starting the petrol engine, and also functions as a generator in conjunction with the boxer mill, charging the car's main battery pack.

The other motor, boasting 88kW of power and 202Nm of torque, drives the wheels in hybrid and pure EV mode, and recharges the battery during regenerative braking.

Subaru says the PHEV is capable of operating as a pure-electric vehicle at speeds up to 105km/h. The 8.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack is capable of up to 27km of EV operation.

Total system power output is said to be 110kW, a few kilowatts less than the standard 2.0-litre model. Despite that, the company claims the XV Plug-in Hybrid can race from 0-60mph (0-97km/h) a full second quicker than the traditional petrol model.

Overall range is said to be around 772 kilometres. Thanks to the car's battery pack, boot space drops from 589 litres to 450L.

The Lagoon Blue Pearl paint pictured here is exclusive to the plug-in hybrid variant, and is one of four paint choices available in the States.

For the American market the XV PHEV rides on 18-inch alloy wheels paired with 225/55 tyres. Other standard features include a 8.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, low-profile roof rails, and heated front seats.

The standard EyeSight safety package also includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, steering responsive headlights, lane keeping assistance, and blind spot monitoring.

The Crosstrek Hybrid arrives in US showrooms later this year with "limited availability". Its starting price of US$34,995 ($47,730) is US$7800 ($10,640) premium over the top-of-the-range 2.0-litre Premium model.

Australia

According to David Rowley, head of corporate affairs for Subaru Australia, the Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid isn't on the radar for Australia as it has been exclusively developed for the US.

The local divisions first hybrids are likely to launch around the final quarter of 2019.
