2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe spied again

Our clearest look yet at the first global front-wheel drive BMW sedan

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been spied again, this time strutting its stuff in Germany.

Although this prototype is wearing a similar level of camouflage to the vehicles spied earlier this year, our spy agency got up close and personal this time around.

These test cars still have some false body panels around the sides, but are wearing production-ready exhaust tips, headlights, and tail-lights for the first time.

Like other Gran Coupe models, the new 2 Series will have frameless side windows and a rapidly-sloping roof line. Although it doesn't feature styling as extroverted as the Mercedes-Benz CLA, it's inevitable the two cars will be pitched against each other.

When the 2 Series Gran Coupe goes on sale, it will be the first front-wheel drive sedan model sold by BMW in most markets except China, which already has its own UKL-based 1 Series sedan.

The switch in platform will likely result in an engine range consisting exclusively of turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Performance variants will most likely be equipped with all-wheel drive, in keeping with the X2 M35i revealed earlier this year.
