Kia Australia announces 2019 AO Editions

Picanto X-Line officially confirmed, Sportage and Sorento get limited-editions too.

Kia Australia has announced a new trio of Australian Open Special Editions for the upcoming 2019 tennis grand slam, including the local debut of the crossover-styled Picanto X-Line.

Introduced after unprecedented demand for the micro hatch, the Picanto X-Line trades the sporting look of the GT-Line for a more adventurous aesthetic, donning 15mm raised suspension, contrasting plastic cladding with skid plate-style treatments at the front and rear, along with unique 16-inch alloy wheels.

Like the GT-Line, the X-Line gets projector halogen headlights with LED daytime-running lights, LED tail-lights, front fog-lights, electric folding side mirrors, 'premium' leather look seat, steering wheel and shift knob trim, and red interior accents.

Five colour options will be available: Clear White, Signal Red, Titanium Silver, Aurora Black and Alice Blue. All hues bar the Clear White are a $520 extra.

Power comes from the same naturally-aspirated 1.25-litre petrol engine as the Picanto S and GT-Line, making 62kW at 6000rpm and 122Nm at 4000rpm.

However, unlike the GT-Line, the X-Line will be available with both a five-speed manual and four-speed automatic, with prices starting at $16,990 drive-away and $17,990 drive-away respectively.

"Since we first introduced Picanto into what we were warned was a dead segment, this little star has captured the imagination in a way which is nothing short of amazing," said Damien Meredith, chief operating officer for Kia Australia.

"It has not only revived the segment but regenerated interest every time a new model or derivative has been introduced. The X-Line is continuing that trend."

Kia's local division is offering AO Editions for the Sportage and Sorento SUVs, too.

The Sportage AO Edition is based on the entry-level Si, gaining 18-inch alloys, LED daytime-running lights, and integrated side steps as standard equipment.

Both petrol front-wheel drive and diesel all-wheel drive versions will be offered, starting at $30,990 drive-away and $36,390 drive-away respectively.

Like other models in the Sportage range, the 2.0-litre 'MPI' petrol sends 114kW and 192Nm to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic, while the 2.0-litre 'CRDI' sends 136kW and 400Nm to an on-demand all-wheel drive system through an eight-speed auto.

The Sportage AO Edition is available in Clear White (standard), Steel Grey, Fiery Red, Mercury Blue, Sparkling Silver and Cherry Black. Premium paints asks for $520 extra.

Finally, the Sorento AO Edition is based on the base Si variant like its Sportage stablemate, bringing equipment enhancements like 18-inch alloy wheels, LED fog-lights and integrated side steps.

Pricing starts at $43,990 drive-away for the 206kW/336Nm 3.5-litre V6 with front-wheel drive, and $46,490 drive-away for the 147kW/441Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel with all-wheel drive.

Regardless of drivetrain, all Sorentos come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
