Hyundai Veloster N priced for the US

New hot hatch to kick off at US$26,900 in standard guise, with N Performance model priced at US$29,000.

Hyundai Motor America has confirmed pricing for the 2019 Veloster N hot hatch, with the entry-level version to start from US$26,900 ($37,266) in the US.

By comparison, a standard Volkswagen Golf GTI starts at US$26,415 ($36,594), though the Hyundai is well-equipped, with standard features including LED headlights, 18-inch alloys, keyless entry with push-button start, an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive suspension, and alloy sports pedals.

In standard form, the Veloster N makes 186kW and 352Nm from its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, which drives the front wheels exclusively through a six-speed manual transmission.

Opting for the US$29,000 ($40,175) Veloster N Performance Package brings a more powerful 205kW engine tune, a mechanical limited-slip front differential, a bi-modal exhaust system, 19-inch alloys shod in 235/35 Pirelli P Zero summer tyres, along with larger front and rear ventilated brake rotors.

All versions of the Veloster N will start arriving in American showrooms from December.

Australia

Despite keen interest from Hyundai's local division, the Veloster N was ruled out for our market when it was revealed at this year's Detroit motor show in January, due to its left-hand drive production schedule.

Where markets like Australia and Europe get the i30 N and i30 Fastback N (due here Q1 2019), the Veloster N is the sole N Performance model available to the North American market.

While the regular Veloster was initially slated for a fourth-quarter launch Down Under, it was recently pushed back by 12 months due to 'production scheduling'. Hyundai Australia declined to provide further details.

It's unclear whether the Veloster N will ever hit the local market, but it's made in Korea alongside right-hand drive versions of the standard Veloster, so there is a possibility it could make the journey at some point.

Speaking with CarAdvice, Hyundai Australia's public relations manager, Guido Schenken, said there is no updates to the Veloster N's local business case, as it is still left-hand drive only.
