Ford ‘Baby Bronco’ accidentally leaked by automaker

Focus-based crossover shown to dealers at a closed-door event, and it looks tough.

The upcoming Ford "Baby Bronco", a new Focus-based model, has been revealed ahead of schedule through to images displayed at a recent conference in Las Vegas.

Usually when images of a new model leak early, it's because of individuals taking pictures when they're not supposed to or publications accidentally pressing the "Publish" button ahead of schedule.

This set of images, though, were discovered by Off-Road.com and were said to be on a publicly accessible portion of Ford's media website.

They seem to be screen captures of footage shot at a recent Ford dealer conference in Las Vegas.

The website claims these pictures show the upcoming Ranger-based Bronco SUV, but sources have told Road & Track they are actually of a new Focus-based crossover commonly referred to as "Baby Bronco".

According to Automotive News, Jim Farley, president of global markets for Ford, told reporters the company didn't reveal any images of the full-size Bronco at the dealer conference.

The overall silhouette, as well as design of the LED headlights and script across the grille, are remarkably similar to an official teaser image (above) of the Baby Bronco unveiled earlier this year.

Additionally, the leaked car looks to be several sizes smaller than any Ranger-based SUV might be, while the relative locations of the front wheels and doors indicate a front-wheel drive platform.

After a trademark registration earlier this year, speculation has it the Baby Bronco may be named Maverick when it heads into production. Whatever it is called, the new crossover is expected to sit in the gap between the EcoSport and Escape, and exude a more Jeep-like image.

The Baby Bronco is expected to be on sale sale in certain markets by 2020.
