Korean EV duo beat out zero-emissions competitors for efficiency and range crowns.
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric and Kona Electric have begun rolling out across the company's export markets, and new tests from the UK have seen the Korean EVs perform strongly in terms of real-world range.
Britain's What Car? recently announced the results of its 'Real Range' tests for electric cars currently available in the UK, complementing the firm's existing 'True MPG' tests for combustion-powered vehicles.
Out of the 14 zero-emission vehicles involved in the test – including everything from the Smart Fortwo EQ and Volkswagen e-Golf to the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model S 75D – the Kona Electric 64kWh managed the longest real-world driving range, achieving a distance of 259 miles (416.82km).
The little electric Korean crossover beat out the Kia e-Niro 64kWh and Jaguar I-Pace (90kWh), both of which tied for second place with real-world ranges of 253mi (407.16km).
Meanwhile, the Ioniq Electric (top) may not have won the outright range award, but proved to be the most power efficient, travelling 3.9mi (6.27km) for every kWh of energy consumed, and posting a real-world range of 117mi (188km).
"Achieving not only the highest ‘real-world’ driving range, but also the best efficiency and lowest cost-per-mile figure of any brand is testament to our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our vehicles," said Tony Whitehorn, CEO for Hyundai Motor UK.
Both the Ioniq Electric and Kona Electric (above) are due in Australian showrooms in the coming months, with the former scheduled to arrive before year's end and the latter penciled in for the first quarter of 2019.
Power in the Ioniq Electric comes from a 98kW/295Nm electric motor hooked up to a 28kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with claimed range rated at up to 280km.
Meanwhile, the 64kWh-spec Kona Electric gets a beefier 150kW/395Nm electric motor paired to a 64kWh battery as the name suggests, allowing for up to 470km (claimed) of driving per charge.
