BMW’s Art Car will race at Le Mans 24 Hour

The 17th Art Car from German manufacturer BMW is set to live up to its motion stripes by participating in the world's most famous endurance race, the Le Mans 24 Hour. This year's car, liveried by Jeff Koons, is none other than an M3 GT2, a pumped up, pumped out 500bhp monster.

It's said to go from 0-100km/h in just 3.4 seconds, and with its 4.0-litre V8 singing to the heavens, it'll match its technicolour coating with its crazy speed. Utilising race-specific brakes, a fully worked chassis and aerodynamic improvements, the M3 GT2 is also a lot lighter than its production counterpart.

It has been endowed with the number 79, signifying a tribute to the 1979 Art Car which was painted by none other than Andy Warhol. It's no ordinary paintjob, though. It's digitally printed, which involves a solvent-based inkjet (yes, just like your Epson at home, but industrial grade) spraying six colours onto self-adhesive vinyl.

The vinyl is then left to outgas, then laminated and applied by hand to the car. The result is lightweight, but resilient - perfect for an endurance race where weight plays a key factor.

The race begins on June 12 with Andy Priaulx , Dirk Müller and Dirk Werner all set for their long stints behind the wheel.
