Mercedes-Benz E300de PHEV launches in the UK

Diesel-electric plug-in hybrid on sale in Britain from £47,900. Not for Australia, though.

Mercedes-Benz UK has launched the E300de plug-in hybrid in both sedan and wagon variants, adding diesel-electric power to its large car line-up.

First previewed in March at the Geneva motor show, the E300de pairs a 145kW/400Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel with a 91kW/440Nm electric motor and 13.5kWh battery system.

System torque output is rated at a beefy 700Nm, while 0-100km/h is dispatched in just 5.9 seconds (6.0 seconds for the Estate).

Meanwhile, the E300de is claimed to be capable of driving up to 34 miles (54.7km) on electric power alone, while combined fuel consumption is rated at 166.2mpg (1.7L/100km).

In addition to the impressive efficiency claims, Mercedes-Benz says the E300de's battery pack can be replenished from 10 to 100 per cent in "under two hours" using a 7.4kW charger.

Priced from £47,900 ($87,779) for the sedan and £49,700 ($90,040) for the Estate in SE specification, the diesel hybrid E-Class gets a healthy level of standard equipment in the UK, including 18-inch alloys, keyless start, blind-spot assist, the Parking Package (including front and rear sensors along with an automated park assistant), ambient interior lighting, open-pore ash wood interior trim, and heated front seats.

Orders for the E300de are now open in the United Kingdom, with deliveries to commence in the spring of 2019 (March-May).

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice Mercedes-Benz's local division ruled Australian availability of the company's new diesel-electric hybrid range, which also includes the updated C-Class overseas, confirming it's focusing on petrol-electric technology instead.

"Mercedes-Benz Australia will continue to offer a broad range of electrification which will include plug-in hybrid models, said Jerry Stamoulis, Benz's local communications boss.

"Under the EQ banner, plug in hybrids will be an important part of our local range as we plan to launch a number of new variants during 2019, along with the launch of the full-electric EQC."
