BMW Gran Coupe in 2012

According to an insider at BMW Headquarters in Munich, Germany, the shark nose Gran Coupe Concept will go into production in the second quarter of 2010.

The news was reported by UK publication Autocar, who was also told that the concept will more than likely become the next generation 6-Series model although, that just doesn’t seem plausible for a number of reasons.

Piers Scott, from BMW Australia, has told CarAdvice that an all-new 6-Series model will be released in the first quarter of 2011. Even more surprising is that the convertible variant will precede the 6-Series Coupe.

At just on five-metres in length, the Gran Sport has sufficient length to support its four-door architecture.

Looking more like a Coupe than a sedan, the concept was to seamlessly blend a four-door grand tourer with sports car like performance and styling. And from where I sit, they would seem to have succeeded.

With a roofline sitting 100 millimetres lower than the current 7-Series, the Gran Sport will be going up against Audi’s A7 and to some extent, the Maserati Quattroporte although, one would assume that will be a more expensive proposition.

We know that the current 5-Series  (7-Series and 5 GT) platform will form the basis for the Gran Sport, along with the same petrol and diesel engine variants as used in those same models but with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

You need to go back to 2007, when the BMW’s CS concept was shown for the first time in Shanghai and then more recently, the ‘Vision’ concept, which seems to impart the company’s new design language.

But first, we look forward to the new 6-Series next year.
