Audi RSQ e-tron: Cartoon concept unveiled

Could it offer a preview of the next R8 supercar? We certainly think it might...

Audi has unveiled a concept car with a difference, combining electric power with automation, voice activation, and a pure-electric powertrain. The only caveat? It's been developed for an animated film...

The RSQ e-tron will feature in Spies In Disguise alongside Lance Sterling, voiced by Will Smith, as the superhero's automotive sidekick.

There are no details about what's powering the slinky vehicle, which looks like an R8 and some of Audi's recent autonomous concepts decided to get amorous, but the official materials say it features a hologram speedometer, electric power and fully-automated driving technology.

According to the vice president of marketing communication at Audi, Giovanni Perosino, the virtual concept car is designed to shine light on the brand's burgeoning electric mobility program, which recently launched its first mass-produced vehicle, the e-tron quattro.

“An international espionage story with future technologies that can save the world is the perfect match for the Audi brand,” Perosino said.

This isn't the first time we've seen Will Smith and Audi team up to save the world. Our first look at the original Audi R8 was the futuristic RSQ from I,Robot, which cynical detective Del Spooner used to fight a robot uprising.

Which has us wondering whether the RSQ e-tron is actually a preview for the next-generation R8. Take away the cartoon extravagance and you've got an evolution of the current car's body shape, complete with the sort of forward-looking electric powertrain we might expect from a 2020/2021 performance flagship.

We'll have to wait and see on that one.
