Nissan 370Z Project Clubsport 23 revealed for SEMA

Sports coupe gets new 295kW twin-turbo V6 and various add-ons – it could make production, too.

Nissan has revealed its 370Z Project Clubsport 23 for this year's SEMA show, headlined by a twin-turbo engine and a range of performance accessories that could soon be available to customers.

Featuring a combination of OEM, aftermarket and bespoke parts, the Clubsport 23 project car "is an ongoing parts development platform", as the company hopes it previews the potential customisation options for current owners.

Let's start with the engine: Nissan took out the original 3.7-litre 'VQ37VHR' naturally-aspirated V6 and replaced it with a 'factory fresh' 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 'VR30DDTT' unit from the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 Red Sport, good for 295kW (or 400hp) – that's 42kW more than the Nismo-spec on which the car is based.

While Nissan doesn't quote a torque figure for the twin-turbo engine, we'd argue the double-snail setup would provide a healthy torque bump over the stock model's 371Nm rating, too – in the Infiniti models with this engine, torque is rated at 475Nm.

Shifting gears is an old-school six-speed manual – Nissan notes it wanted to "fully engage sports car enthusiasts" by offering a stick – though the company says this presented a challenge, given the twin-turbo engine has never been coupled to a manual (it's normally paired to a seven-speed automatic).

MA Motorsports developed a special clutch disc, cover and flywheel to help transfer drive to the Nismo GT LSD Pro-Carbon two-way differential at the rear, which is coupled with an MA Motorsports diff cooler.

Other new components include an AMS Performance cold air intake kit, Z1 Motorsports blow-off valves, a bespoke MA Motorsports 76mm dual-exhaust system which exits through where the licence plate would normally sit, along with cooling and steering systems provided by AMS Performance, MA Motorsports and Z1 Motorsports.

As for the brakes, there are "soon-to-be released" Nismo HC brake pads mated to Z1 Motorsports two-piece slotted rotors and Nismo stainless steel brake lines. Under the skin "newly-released" Nismo front and rear suspension components and a three-piece body brace set feature, along with a KW Variant 3 coilover shock kit and Eibach rear springs.

Filling the arches are Nismo-branded Rays 18-inch cast aluminium-alloy wheels shod in 285/35 R18 Hankook RS4 'high performance' tyres. Nissan says these wheels are "expected to be available through (US) dealerships at a future date".

Inside, there's new Sparco QRT-R competition racing seats with six-point harnesses, a Sparco R383 steering wheel with Bell Works Rapfix hub, a cabin fire extinguisher system, a custom welded-in roll cage, along with a custom upholstery package by MA Motorsports which features leather trim accented by red cross-stitching in a diamond pattern – a hark back to the original 240Z.

Rounding out the changes is the body kit, which combines a range of factory Nismo parts with an APR carbon front splitter and MA Motorsports air dam, a modified rear bumper, JDM rear fog-light, Selbon carbon-fibre bonnet with 'Aerocatch' pins, along with Nismo carbon fibre mirror caps and pillar trims. The Gloss Burnt Orange finish, meanwhile, is a body wrap supplied by Speedesign Custom Graphics.

In addition to the Project Clubsport show car, Nissan has several other concepts on display at SEMA, including the Paws One Titan (above) built in collaboration with Animal Rescue Rigs (ARR).

The special Titan is actually scheduled to be deployed in 2019 wearing the name 'PAWS TWO', which will assist the ARR charity organisation in providing animal relief during and after natural disasters.

Other vehicles include a 370Z drift racer, and a 'Sound Machine' based on the Nissan Kicks compact crossover. Get the full gallery of images here.
