Volkswagen planning new small SUV for the US – report
Entry-level crossover to sit below Tiguan, though it won't be the T-Cross or T-Roc.
Volkswagen's North American division is reportedly working on a new 'sub-compact' SUV to sit below the Tiguan, though it won't be the recently-revealed T-Cross or T-Roc.
Car and Driver claims the German brand is keen to introduce a new model in the US to compete with the Honda HR-V and Jeep Renegade, though this new crossover looks to be specific to the US market – much like the larger Atlas, though that is also sold in China as the Terramont.
An unnamed Volkswagen representative has reportedly confirmed these claims, leading the American publication to believe the new model will be spun off the company's ubiquitous MQB platform, which underpins just about everything from the Golf to the Atlas.
Given its underpinnings, the new SUV model should be powered by a range of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines, and offer the choice of front- and all-wheel drive.
It's believed the as yet unnamed crossover will be a little larger than both the T-Cross (above) and T-Roc (top), as the company reckons those two models are too small for the US – despite the T-Roc being similar in size to the Golf. It's worth noting the Polo isn't offered Stateside, either.
As for timing, the new model has been ruled out for a 2019 launch, leading Car and Driver to speculate the little crossover will arrive in the US sometime during 2020.
The all-new T-Cross was revealed last week for Europe, China and South America, claiming to offer interior practicality equivalent to a small hatchback in a vehicle smaller in physical size than a Mazda CX-3.
Australia can expect it in the next 18 months, according to Volkswagen's local arm.
