Bugatti Chiron Super Sport headed to Geneva – report
1500hp 'missile' could be launching next year – will it be Bugatti's shot at reclaiming the production car top speed record?
Bugatti is prepping an even more extreme version of the Chiron for next year's Geneva motor show – according to a new report.
The Supercar Blog claims sketches of this vehicle were shown to 'VIP customers' at the unveiling of the Divo, described as "a beauty of speed" and a "ground-to-ground missile".
While the name isn't officially confirmed, the publication speculates this new model could be known as the Chiron Super Sport, likely to be made in very limited numbers.
According to the report, between 20 and 40 examples will be produced, all featuring a revised version of the 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 that powers the 'standard' Chiron and Divo tuned to deliver more than 1500hp (1118kW). Currently, the Chiron and Divo make 1103kW and 1600Nm.
Where the Divo is more track focused than the Chiron, the Super Sport would likely be chasing all-out top speed, much like the Veyron Super Sport before it.
The 'standard' Chiron and Chiron Sport are currently limited to 420km/h, amd we think Bugatti will want to steal the fastest production car record back from Koenigsegg, currently sitting at 457km/h achieved in an Agera RS.
Stefan Winkelmann, Bugatti's CEO, has already gone on record saying the regular Chiron "easily" capable of 440km/h or 450km/h, though the company have "not made the test".
"If you do it then it's not something that needs to be done only once, but all the cars need to be built in a certain way," he told CarAdvice at Monterey Car Week last month.
Going by Winkelmann's comments, the Super Sport is a perfect opportunity to gun for top speed glory considering it's a standalone variant and the marque has had time since the Chiron's initial launch in 2016 to carry out these high-speed tests and manufacture all units accordingly.
Further to that, it would be a fitting send-off to the Chiron and its manic W16 engine, given the automotive industry's push towards electrification.
