2019 Audi R8, R8 Spyder revealed

Refreshed supercar gets more power, sharper looks, retuned suspension ahead of 2019 market launch.

The facelifted 2019 Audi R8 has been officially revealed this morning, before it goes on sale in Europe early next year.

UPDATE, 24/10/18: Audi has confirmed outputs and acceleration times for the 2019 R8 range. See article for details.

Shortly after the German marque published a teaser image on its Facebook page, we now can see the updated supercar in all its glory – headlined by a fresh exterior design, new colours, and more power.

Both the R8 coupe and R8 Spyder get a more angular look than the outgoing model, with a wider front grille with three horizontal slats sitting above it – harking back to the Ur-quattro – a new front splitter and a more aggressive design for the front intakes.

New alloy wheel designs feature too, along with a new three-part engine cover at the rear which can be had in plastic or carbon-fibre. Speaking of the rear, the updated R8 gets a more prominent diffuser treatment with large oval-shaped tailpipe finishers, compared to the current car's squared-off quad-tip arrangement.

The R8 can now be had in Kemora Grey (pictured on the R8 Spyder) and Ascari Blue (pictured on the R8 coupe) as well.

Audi says modifications have been made to the suspension system for "even more stability and precision", while both the standard steering and optional dynamic steering systems have been retuned for better response and feedback for a "more precise" feel.

Depending on variant, there's also three new drive modes – dry, wet and snow – in the Audi drive select programs. Changes to the stability control system have also allowed the R8 to improve stopping performance. The company claims the updated model can come to a complete stop up to 1.5 metres earlier from 100km/h and up to 5.0 metres shorter from 200km/h.

For 2019 the R8 is "more powerful and faster" than before, with both available tunes of the R8's 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 shared with the Lamborghini Huracan getting power and torque bumps. The 'basic' R8 now makes 419kW and 550Nm (up 22kW/10Nm), while the high-spec 'Performance' version is rated at 456kW and 580Nm (up 7kW/20Nm)

With the extra grunt, the entry-level R8 hits 100km/h from a standstill in 3.4 seconds (3.5 for the Spyder), while the Performance sprints to triple figures in just 3.1 seconds (3.2 in Spyder guise) – improving by 0.1 seconds. Top speed, meanwhile, is 324km/h for the 'standard' R8 coupe and 331km/h for the R8 Performance coupe – up 4km/h and 1km/h respectively.

The 2019 R8 will be arriving in German dealerships during the first quarter of 2019.

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice, Audi's local division confirmed the revised R8 range will be hitting Australian showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2019.
