Chevrolet Camaro hybrids could be on the cards – report

It looks like The General is doing some market research into how people would receive an electric-boosted Camaro.

Earlier this week, a Ford advertising campaign teased a Mustang hybrid of some sort. Now, it looks like there could be electrified competition coming from Chevrolet.

According to a report from Motor Authority, which cites a forum post, a group of current Camaro owners were recently surveyed by Chevrolet about how they'd receive a hybrid, turbocharged four-cylinder or a hybrid V8 powertrain.

It asked which of the two powertrains owners would buy in a 'sport coupe': a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid inline-four with 365hp (270kW), 30mpg (7.8L/100km) and 0-60mph (97km/h) in 4.4 seconds, or a 6.2-litre hybrid V8 with 545hp (406kW), 24mpg (9.4L/100km) and 0-60 in just 3.7 seconds.

At the moment, the Camaro range includes an entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo, a naturally-aspirated 3.6-litre V6, and a 6.2-litre V8 in varying states of tune.

According to the survey, the four-pot hybrid would command a US$4000 price premium over a pure internal-combustion four-cylinder unit, while the hybrid V8 would cost an extra US$8000 over the base car.

Responding to Motor Authority's questions about the potential for hybrid Camaro variants, General Motors said: "We routinely survey our customers across all of our vehicles on potential future technologies or features, but that doesn’t mean we are going to institute them.”
