Ford GT production count grows by 350 units

That boosts the total run to 1350, well over the proposed 500.

Ford has expanded production of its GT supercar again, announcing 350 new vehicles will be offered atop the existing production run of 1000.

When it was first announced, there were only plans to build 500 examples of the GT. Then, in August 2016, Ford announced plans to extend production by two years, pushing the build count to 1000.

Now, it's adding a further 350 vehicles in the face of 'unprecedented demand' from punters, taking the total production count to 1350. The build run will extend to 2022 now, instead of the original 2020 deadline.

"The response to our Ford GT has been unprecedented, with initial demand outstripping supply by more than six-to-one," said Hermann Salenbauch, director of Ford Performance.

"By extending the Ford GT production run for a limited period, we’re able to maintain the exclusivity of the ultra-desirable supercar while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers."

Power comes from a twin-turbo 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, making 470kW and 731Nm. It's put exclusively to the rear wheels, while the driver and passenger sit in a carbon-fibre tub.

Potential buyers will need to go through the same exhaustive selection process as earlier customers to get their build slot, essentially proving to Ford why they'll be a valuable customer for the brand. This process has, naturally, put some applicants offside.
