Peugeot confirms electrified performance models from 2020

French brand's announcement hints at hybrid hot hatches, sports sedans and SUVs. Maybe an all-electric e-Legend?

Peugeot has committed to bringing a range of "electrified sports vehicles", starting from 2020.

While it hasn't quite confirmed what form these models will take, the French firm says it will "offer its customers a range of high-performance, low-emission electrified sports vehicles from 2020".

"These electrified sports versions will be developed in collaboration with Peugeot Sport teams and will contribute to the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions, in accordance with the instructions of the European institutions addressed to the automotive industry," Peugeot said in its press release.

It's the first time we've heard official confirmation of electrified performance vehicles from the French manufacturer, though there's been numerous reports claiming the next-generation 208 GTi and 308 GTi hot hatches will offer electrified powertrain options.

Additionally, the company has gone on record saying it intends to be powertrain agnostic, allowing customers to "buy the car then choose the powertrain".

"Driving pleasure is at the heart of the brand's history. Electrification is a new opportunity to offer new high-performance versions to our customers looking for low-emission sports sensations," said Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO for Peugeot.

"Sensations will be amplified by the performance provided by electrification. New territories to be explored, new challenges to be met, the adventure of the Peugeot brand continues for an exciting future. Boredom will never be part of our DNA."

We reckon the first models to get the electrified performance treatment will be the aforementioned 208 and 308 hot hatches, which are soon due for a generational overhaul, along with the rumoured high-output plug-in hybrid version of the 508.

The company has also said it will consider building the gorgeous all-electric e-Legend concept (above) it launched at the Paris motor show earlier this month if there's enough interest.

Last month, Peugeot also revealed the 3008 GT Hybrid4, a 221kW plug-in hybrid crossover capable of hitting 100km/h in 6.5 seconds – which is hot hatch territory, mind you – and driving up to 50km on solely electric power from its 13.2kWh battery.

The company's local arm, however, ruled out an Australian market launch for this model, along with the lower-output PHEV version of the 508 sedan and wagon, for the time being.

"Peugeot’s new range of hybrid drivetrains are not currently available for Australia," the company said.

"We will however, continue to monitor the availability and suitability of the drivetrain for Australian customers and if they were to become available, we would certainly study the case for local introduction."
