$5 million Federal automotive engineer program announced

New initiative will encourage graduates to work in Australia's automotive industry, with FCAI voicing its support.

Australia's automotive industry has received a boost this week, with Federal Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, Karen Andrews, announcing a $5 million investment to help graduate engineers kick-start their careers.

While local manufacturing is no more, numerous vehicle manufacturers and other firms rely on Australian workers for automotive engineering, research and development, along with design.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), welcomed Parliament's announcement, with CEO Tony Weber voicing the organisation's support for the investment.

"This program helps to ensure that Australia continues to reap the benefits of many decades of investment into the automotive sector. Australian R&D, design and engineering continues to play a key role in future technologies," Weber said.

"Automotive designers and engineers are at the forefront of future developments, as the global automotive industry transitions to low-emission, connected and autonomous technologies. We encourage collaboration with industry to enable maximum opportunities for program participants to leverage global supply chain opportunities."

"Advanced skills are crucial to future needs across Australia’s automotive sector, which will help to ensure the safety and security of Australian consumers as they purchase and maintain new vehicle technology.

"It is important that adequate skills and training are deployed and maintained across Australia’s automotive industry," he added.
