2019 Audi A1 Allroad spied

Is Audi preparing a jacked-up take on its smallest car?

A prototype believed to be the 2019 Audi A1 Allroad has been snapped testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, wearing extra body cladding and a taller ride height.

Beyond what we can see here, there aren't really any details available about the A1 Allroad. Audi has never offered one of its high-riding, toughened-up editions on anything smaller than an A4, so we're sort of in uncharted waters here.

As for how we know it's an Allroad? Audi has tried hard to hide them, but there are wider sills, bigger wheels, a more pronounced front splitter and a taller ride height than the standard A1 on the car pictured here.

Power in the regular A1 range will come from a range of compact engines, from a 1.0-litre turbo triple making 70kW to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder making 147kW.

Allroad models have traditionally been higher-spec vehicles, so we'd suggest the taller supermini will run with engines at the more powerful end of the spectrum. It's a similar story with the exterior specification: although 15- to 18-inch wheels are offered on the regular A1, it seems likely only the larger of those options will be available.

Given all A1 models will be fitted with the 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument binnacle, expect to see the same tech in the Allroad. At this point, we're purely speculating based on the information at hand.
