2019 Mazda CX-5 2.5T launches in Japan

Pre-orders for updated SUV open in domestic market, headlined by new turbo petrol engine, manual option for diesel models, GVC Plus, and a more upmarket flagship variant.

The Mazda CX-5 has been updated in its home market, confirming the availability of the CX-9's 2.5-litre turbo petrol engine for the mid-sized SUV.

Available to pre-order now in the Japanese domestic market, the refreshed CX-5 range is the first model in the company's Japanese line-up to offer the turbocharged petrol powertrain – which makes 169kW at 4250rpm and 420Nm at 2000rpm – while also debuting Mazda's upgraded G-Vectoring Control Plus.

The latter differentiates itself from the current system by using the brakes "to add direct yaw moment control for further enhanced handling stability". For example, if the driver steers out of a corner and returns the steering wheel to the centre position, GVC Plus applies the brakes lightly on the outside wheels to provide a "stabilising moment" and return the vehicle accurately to the straight-ahead position.

Rounding out the mechanical changes is the new option of a six-speed manual transmission for models equipped with the 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, available in both front- and all-wheel drive applications.

In terms of technology and driver assistance, there's nighttime pedestrian detection added to the autonomous emergency braking system, am available 360-degree camera system, and an upgraded MZD Connect infotainment system which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – another first for the Japanese market.

The cabin has also been revised with a new climate control panel, including redesigned switches and dials similar to that of the Mazda 6 and CX-9, fabric trim on the A-pillars, two additional speakers at the base of the A-pillars for models with the base sound system (now six), and a new 17-inch alloy wheel finish – now metallic grey instead of dark silver.

Finally, the updated model will be available in Japan with a limited-edition 'Exclusive Mode' variant (pictured), which brings numerous luxury touches seen previously in other Mazda models at launch.

Key highlights include nappa leather trim, real wood trim inserts, a frameless rear-view mirror, 19-inch alloys in an exclusive dark-gloss finish, ventilated front seats, a 7.0-inch TFT LCD display in the driver's instrument cluster, along with white LED interior lighting.

Australia

Mazda's local division was unable to offer comment regarding Australia availability on the updated CX-5. Our guess is, however, that we should see these changes made as part of a 2019 model-year update very late this year or early next.

Japanese sales start on November 22, though the updated CX-5 can be pre-ordered in its home market now.
