Volkswagen ART3on: Apprentice-built special hits 100km/h in 3.9 seconds

That's one very fast liftback. It'll stand out in the golf club carpark, too.

A team of Volkswagen Australia apprentices has made the Arteon 206TSI into a sub-4.0-second car, as a showcase for the World Time Attack Challenge at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The modified five-door, dubbed ART3on, makes 360kW and 600Nm from its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, up from 206kW and 350Nm. That extra grunt has been liberated by a raft of 'Stage 3' parts from RacingLine, including software tweaks and hardware changes like a bigger turbocharger.

It rides on a custom Bilstein suspension, and the interior is kitted out with a roll cage, racing seats and harnesses, a fuel cut-off, and a fire extinguisher. Oh, and the standard tyres have been subbed for Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo semi-slicks, for better off-the-line traction.

As a result, the car hit 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds down the back straight at Luddenham Raceway in New South Wales. Volkswagen claims the run was conducted uphill, too.

"This program is unique to the Australian automotive sector in that we are collaborating with a part of the industry that we typically wouldn't as a subsidiary importer," said Luka Popovac, national customer experience and capability manager for VW Australia.

"We have been blown away by the support of our program mentors, who have given generously of their time, and their products, to help teach our apprentices and build something extraordinary."

Not only has the ART3on inspired our apprentices, we hope it will also inspire a new generation of technicians to pick up a trade in Australian automotive," he added.

Complementing the mechanical package is an eye-catching, artsy exterior treatment. Designed by Simon Murray, a Sydney street artist, the wrap will help the ART3on stand out among the wild/winged creations that dominate the paddock at WTAC.

Speaking of which, the hotted-up Arteon will make its public debut at Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend. We've already driven it, though – check the video out here.
