Ford begins production of electric Transit vans

Specially designed vans will deliver packages within German cities

Production of an electric Ford Transit van has begun in Europe as part of a partnership with Deutsche Post.

Dubbed StreetScooter, these vans start life as a standard Transit chassis built in Turkey. They're fitted with unique bodies and drivetrains at a site near Ford's European headquarters in Cologne, Germany, and finished in DHL's distinctive yellow livery.

The venture project employs around 180 production staff, and can make 3500 electric vans per year.

Ford says the StreetScooter range will be produced with a variety of body sizes and drivetrains. The largest, dubbed Work XL, has a payload capacity of up to 1275kg, and a load volume of 20,000 litres – good for over 200 packages.

This variant comes with the gutsiest electric motor, rated at 90kW of power and 276Nm of torque, as well as the largest battery. The 76kWh lithium-ion pack is said to provide up to 200km of driving range.

The companies claim one of these electric vans will save around 1900 litres of diesel each year, and reduce CO2 emissions by around five tonnes.

Deutsche Post's DHL unit will use its new fleet of electric Transit vans for urban parcel deliveries within Germany.
