2019 BMW 3 Series Touring patent images published

No alarms and no surprises for the upcoming five-door 3 Series

The design of the next-generation BMW 3 Series Touring has been revealed via patent renderings handed over to the Brazilian patent office.

Brazilian website Quatro Rodas discovered these patent diagrams on the country's National Institute of Industrial Property site.

These images show the new wagon is identical to the just-unveiled sedan from the B-pillar forward. Behind this point the wagon will feature unique rear passenger doors, and a more capacious hind section.

Despite the more practical rear, the 3er Touring looks as though it will have a rear bumper and tail-light assembly almost indistinguishable from the sedan's.

Under the bonnet, the new 3 Series Touring will likely feature most, if not all, of the new 3 Series' drivetrains, although we're not holding our breath for an M3 wagon any time soon.

So far BMW has confirmed a collection of turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines for the new 3 Series, ranging in power from 110kW to 190kW.

There's also 195kW/580Nm 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel. A plug-in hybrid variant, and more six-cylinder choices are expected in the future.

As with the 3 Series sedan, the wagon will ride on BMW's CLAR platform, which will see it shed weight despite gaining millimetres in almost every direction.

In all likelihood, the new 3 Series wagon will probably make its debut in 2019.
