2019 Holden Commodore/Opel Insignia wagon facelift spied

Bolder front-end design on its way for large German-made wagon

A facelifted version of the Opel Insignia Sports Tourer wagon, sold in Australia as the Holden Commodore, has been spied undergoing testing in Europe.

Up front, the Insignia prototype sports a disguised and completely reworked front fascia. From what we can see, the Insignia will gain a full-width grille which will blend into a set of redesigned headlights.

Not only will these changes give the Insignia a bolder and more distinctive look, but they seem to be a step towards the 'visor' design that made its debut on the GT X Experimental concept.

While the concept car featured a plexiglass "grille" with an illuminated badge in the centre, the Insignia looks as though it will feature a more traditional crosshatch design.

There's also some tape on the the tail-lights, hinting at changes to the graphics, but we can't quite discern what those modifications are.

We don't know if the facelift is only skin deep, or whether the PSA Group is planning on fitting its own engines and infotainment systems to the Insignia.

Either way, the automaker isn't hanging around as it seeks to reimagine its German brand and its flagship model, which was only unveiled in early 2017.

It's not known if the Holden Commodore will take these design changes, or if GM's Australian arm will try to soldier on with the current design.

The Insignia/Commodore was the last production Opel/Vauxhall model designed by GM before it sold its European operations to the PSA Group, owners of the Peugeot, Citroen and DS marques.

The Commodore is produced under contract by the French automaker.
