2020 Jeep Renegade plug-in hybrid confirmed

The Jeep Renegade plug-in hybrid has been confirmed for a 2020 launch, although details about its new drivetrain have yet be revealed.

The new variant will be produced alongside the existing petrol and diesel versions of the Renegade and Fiat 500X, its twin under the skin, at Fiat Chrysler's Melfi plant in southern Italy.

Pre-production models of the plug-in hybrid Renegade will roll down the line in 2019, with the car set to be available from early 2020.

Fiat Chrysler says the new Renegade variant will cost around €200 million ($324 million) to bring to market. This figure includes not only the money required to develop the new drivetrain, but also modernisation of the Melfi plant and retaining its workforce.

According to the company's latest five-year plan, announced in June this year, Jeep will offer an electrified drivetrain for each of its models by 2021. By 2022 the brand will reportedly offer 10 plug-in hybrid models, and four full-electric models.

At present, the only other plug-in hybrid offered within the Fiat Chrysler empire is the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid.
